Global competition is leading to a wide variety of teams to accomplish work tasks and to develop new products. Teams may be permanent organizational fixtures or temporary to launch an innovative product.
NPD teams follow four foundational designs:
- Functional work groups,
- Lightweight teams,
- Heavyweight teams, and
- Venture teams.
As projects increase in complexity and risk, the team structure needs to become more cross-functional and autonomous.
Self-directed teams provide high levels of job satisfaction to individuals yet are more difficult to manage when team members are dispersed globally. Virtual teams can employ specific meeting protocols to gain higher success rates in NPD.
