The other night I made up a plate of fruits, cheeses, and crackers, grabbed a glass of wine and plugged in a classic favorite movie – My Fair Lady.
For those of you not familiar with Audrey Hepburn’s outstanding performance in this Academy award winning 1964 musical, the basic story is a rags to riches one. Phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, makes a bet with another chap that he can convert a common girl selling flowers on a street corner in London to a presentable lady within just six months.
Set in Edwardian times, Eliza Doolittle is forced to overcome language deficiencies from “gutter” slang to refined upper-crust English. To benefit the love story, she is also transformed from a dirty, messy girl to an incredibly beautiful and enchanting woman. She successfully convinces attendees at a party for the king that is a Hungarian princess!
The message of this wonderful movie is that learning to speak properly can open doors to new experiences. Eliza Doolittle learned proper English, cavorted with royalty, and got her guy!
