07.01.11 NPD Glossary

Sustaining Innovation

Originally termed by Clayton Christensen in The Innovator’s Dilemma.  In contrast to disruptive technology, sustaining innovations do not have a drastic effect on the market or product uses.  Sustaining technologies may be transformational or continuous (incremental improvements).

To better understand the difference between sustaining innovation and disruptive innovation, please take a course at www.simple-pdh.com on Disruptive Innovation and earn one professional development hour (1 PDH) toward your NPDP or PMP renewal.

Learn more about sustaining and disruptive innovation in a thought leadership paper, “How to Disrupt Innovatively.”

For more innovation and new product development terms and definitions, please see the NPD Glossary.
